Translation
By the semen of Dīrghatamā in the wife of Bali, the emperor of the world, six sons took birth, namely Aṅga, Vaṅga, Kaliṅga, Suhma, Puṇḍra and Oḍra.
In the wife of Bali, the son of Utathya (brother of Bṛhaspati), named Dīrghatamā, [Note: He was the blind child of Utathya and Mamatā by the curse of Bṛhaspati. He became a sage and at the request of Bali bore sons in Bali’s wife Sudeṣṇa. ] were born six sons.
Personal Guidance
By Dīrghatamā's seed in Bali's wife, six sons are born: Aṅga, Vaṅga, Kaliṅga, Suhma, Puṇḍra, Oḍra. Entire eastern Indian regions are named after these six brothers — geography itself sometimes preserves a single household.
Reflection Questions
- What geographical or institutional names in my life trace to a single household I have not honored?
- Where could a small pilgrimage to a region's namesake deepen my connection?
