My dear King Parīkṣit, your father, Abhimanyu, was born from the womb of Subhadrā as the son of Arjuna. He was the conqueror of all atirathas [those who could fight with one thousand charioteers]. From him, by the womb of Uttarā, the daughter of Virāḍrāja, you were born.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Your father, Abhimanyu, was born from the womb of Subhadrā as the son of Arjuna. He was the conqueror of all atirathas [those who could fight with one thousand charioteers]. From him, by the womb of Uttarā, the daughter of Virāḍrāja, you were born.
Abhimanyu, Arjuna's son by Subhadrā, conquers atirathas; you, Parīkṣit, are born of him and Uttarā. Śukadeva turns the line directly into his listener's own personal history — sacred narration is meant to land in the listener's own body.
Reflection Questions
  • Where does scripture's narration meet my own life, and have I let it land?
  • What would I do today if I treated the Bhāgavatam as my own family record?
