when the dynasty of Mahārāja Bharata.
Although encouraged by the demigods to maintain the child, Mamatā considered him useless because of his illicit birth, and therefore she left him. Consequently, the demigods known as the Maruts maintained the child, and when Mahārāja Bharata was disappointed for want of a child, this child was given to him as his son.
Purport
From this verse it is understood that those who are rejected from the higher planetary system are given a chance to take birth in the most exalted families on this planet earth.
Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Ninth Canto, Twentieth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “The Dynasty of Pūru.”

Translation
Although encouraged by the devatās to maintain the child, Mamatā considered him useless because of his illicit birth, and therefore she left him. The Maruts maintained the child, and when Mahārāja Bharata was disappointed for want of a child, they gave this child as his son.
The devatās encouraged her in a joking way. “O Mamatā! Follow the order of Bṛhaspati, your paramour.” Thinking the child useless, Mamaṭa out of embarrassment abandoned the child. Another version has ādijam instead of vitatham. She gave up the child born of Bṛhaspati. The Maruts raised the child she abandoned. After accepting him, they gave the child to Bharata when Bharata’s lineage was interrupted.
Thus ends the commentary on the Twentieth Chapter of the Ninth Canto of the Bhāgavatam for the pleasure of the devotees, in accordance with the previous ācāryas.
Chapter Twenty-one

Personal Guidance
Mamatā considers him useless for his illicit birth and abandons him; the Maruts maintain him until Bharata adopts him. Even rejected children, if maintained by the right caretakers, end up given to emperors as sons.
Reflection Questions
- Whose adoption have I been called to that I have postponed?
- Where might my role be to maintain someone in the gap between abandonment and their final placement?
