O beautiful lotus-eyed woman, who are you? Whose daughter are you? What purpose do you have in this solitary forest? Why are you staying here?
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
O beautiful lotus-eyed woman! Attractive woman! Who are you? Whose daughter are you? What are you doing here alone in forest?
Personal Guidance
He asks who she is, whose daughter she is, and why she is alone in the forest. The interrogation looks like respect; it is partly that, partly an inquiry whose answers will be used by desire.
Reflection Questions
- Where have I asked respectful-sounding questions whose answers I was already using for unrespectful ends?
- How could I refine the inner motive behind my outward courtesies?
