I have spent a full one thousand years enjoying sense gratification, yet my desire to enjoy such pleasure increases daily.

Mahārāja Yayāti is explaining, in terms of his actual experience, how strong are sexual desires, even in old age.

Translation
Though I have spent a full one thousand years enjoying, my desire to enjoy such pleasure increases daily. I am an example showing that even time does not rid a person of attachment to enjoyment.
A thousand years of enjoyment, and Yayāti's desire grows daily. The data is in — the experiment is conclusive; we are spared having to confirm it personally.
Reflection Questions
  • Why am I still hoping to be the exception to a thousand-year experiment that failed?
  • What honest acceptance of the result would change today?
