Translation
King Yayāti had four younger brothers, whom he allowed to rule the four directions. Yayāti himself married Devayānī, the daughter of Śukrācārya, and Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛṣaparvā, and ruled the entire earth. Yayāti married the daughter of Śukrācārya (kāvyasya) and the daughter of Vṛṣaparvā.
Yayāti distributes the four directions to his brothers and marries Devayānī and Śarmiṣṭhā. Power-sharing among siblings and dual marriages are presented matter-of-factly — life is layered, and the Bhāgavatam does not airbrush.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I expecting a tidier life than scripture itself depicts?
  • How could I be more sober and less surprised by life's layered arrangements?
