King Vṛṣaparvā understood that Śukrācārya was coming to chastise or curse him. Consequently, before Śukrācārya came to his house, Vṛṣaparvā went out and fell down in the street at the feet of his guru and satisfied him, checking his wrath.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
King Vṛṣaparvā, understanding that Śukrācārya desired to speak to the devatās, fell down at his feet with his head and satisfied his guru. Śukrācārya wanted to speak to the devatās and say, “I am rejecting the demons, and I will make you victorious over the demons.” Vṛṣaparvā (son of Danu and Kaśyapa SB 6.6.32) understood that Śukrācārya desired to say this.
King Vṛṣaparvā goes out to meet his guru in the street and falls at his feet before any chastisement begins. Anticipatory humility short-circuits much divine wrath — running out to meet it is wiser than waiting for it to arrive.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I awaiting a confrontation that anticipatory humility could defuse?
  • Whose feet should I be hurrying out to meet before the lesson has to be delivered?
