Being forsaken by her husband, Sītādevī entrusted her two sons to the care of Vālmīki Muni. Then, meditating upon the lotus feet of Lord Rāmacandra, she entered into the earth.
Purport
It was impossible for Sītādevī to live in separation from Lord Rāmacandra. Therefore, after entrusting her two sons to the care of Vālmīki Muni, she entered into the earth.

Translation
Being forsaken by her husband, Sītā entrusted her two sons to the care of Vālmīki. Then, meditating upon the lotus feet of Rāmacandra, she entered into the earth.
Unable to bear the pain of separation from her husband she entered a hole in the earth.
Personal Guidance
Sītā entrusts her sons to Vālmīki and meditatively enters the earth, unable to live in separation. Real love of the Lord can make even the world itself unbearable when separation is decreed.
Reflection Questions
- Have I tasted the kind of love that would make ordinary life feel impossible without its object?
- What would my devotion have to grow into for separation from the Lord to actually pain me?
