Translation
The citizens of Ayodhyā, upon seeing their King return after a long absence, showered him with flower garlands, waved their upper cloths, and danced in great jubilation. Uttarāḥ kosalāḥ means the citizens of Ayodhyā. They waved their upper cloths and danced.
The citizens wave their upper cloths and dance in jubilation. Devotional joy in a community is messy, physical, and uninhibited — and it sanctifies the public square.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my devotional life is joy being kept under the upper cloth?
  • What public expression of devotion am I avoiding for fear of looking foolish?
