came in front of (for the sake of fighting).
Lord Rāmacandra, surrounded by Lakṣmaṇa and monkey soldiers like Sugrīva, Hanumān, Gandhamāda, Nīla, Aṅgada, Jāmbavān and Panasa, attacked the soldiers of the Rākṣasas, who were fully equipped with various invincible weapons like swords, lances, bows, prāsas, ṛṣṭis, śakti arrows, khaḍgas and tomaras.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Rāmacandra, surrounded by Lakṣmaṇa and monkey soldiers like Sugrīva, Hanumān, Gandhamāda, Nīla, Aṅgada, Jāmbavān and Panasa, attacked the soldiers of the Rākṣasas, who were equipped with invincible weapons like swords, lances, bows, missiles, spears, pikes, arrows, knives and javelins. Anvitaḥ means Rāma, surrounded by the others.
Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, with monkey soldiers carrying only trees and stones, face an army equipped with sophisticated weapons. The Lord's side often appears under-resourced — until the actual battle starts.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I shrink from a fight on the Lord's side because my 'resources' look inadequate?
  • How might my supposed lack of equipment be an invitation to lean more on the Lord?
