Lord Śiva.
O King Parīkṣit, when Rāvaṇa, who had ten heads on his shoulders, heard about the beautiful and attractive features of Sītā, his mind was agitated by lusty desires, and he went to kidnap her. To distract Lord Rāmacandra from His āśrama, Rāvaṇa sent Mārīca in the form of a golden deer, and when Lord Rāmacandra saw that wonderful deer, He left His residence and followed it and finally killed it with a sharp arrow, just as Lord Śiva killed Dakṣa.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O King! Seeing the deer who was actually Mārīca in disguise send by Rāvaṇa, who was enflamed with desire on hearing about Sītā, Rama was lured away from the hermitage by the deer’s fabulous golden body, and killed the deer with his sharp arrow just as Śiva killed Dakṣa. Then, on seeing Mārīca in the form of a deer sent by Rāvaṇa (who thought of stealing her on hearing about her from Sūrpaṇakha), which was a ploy to lure Rāma from the hermitage, Rāma, lured far away from the hermitage by the astonishing golden deer, killed Mārīca just as Śiva killed Dakṣa (kam).
Rāvaṇa sends a golden deer because lust will use beauty to distract us from what is truly precious. The exact mechanism of every spiritual loss is the same — a beautiful distraction at the moment when our beloved is least protected.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'golden deer' is currently trying to lure me out of my āśrama?
  • When my attention chases it, who is left unprotected at home?
