Thereafter, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, having taken possession of the container of nectar, smiled slightly and spoke in attractive words. She said: My dear demons, if you accept whatever I may do, whether honest or dishonest, then I can take responsibility for dividing the nectar among you.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot abide by anyone’s dictation. Whatever He does is absolute. The demons, of course, were deluded by the illusory potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and thus Mohinī-mūrti got them to promise that whatever She would do they would accept.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Thereafter, the Lord, having taken the container of nectar, spoke with slightly joking words. “If you accept whatever I may do, whether right or wrong, then I will divide the nectar.” If you accept what I do, whether it is right or wrong, I will divide the nectar. I know my own ignorance. That is why I say this first.
If you accept whatever I do — honest or dishonest — I will divide it. The Lord makes the demons consent in advance to His final cheating. Surrender is asked from us, too, before the outcome is visible. The trust is the test.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'whatever You do' have I promised the Lord, when only easy outcomes were in view?
  • Can I sign that promise again, knowing some of His decisions will look 'unjust' to me?
