one of the demigods eligible to share the benefits of sacrifices.
This person was Dhanvantari, a plenary portion of a plenary portion of Lord Viṣṇu. He was very conversant with the science of medicine, and as one of the demigods he was permitted to take a share in sacrifices.

Śrīla Madhvācārya remarks:

teṣāṁ satyāc cālanārthaṁ harir dhanvantarir vibhuḥ samartho ’py asurāṇāṁ tu sva-hastād amucat sudhām

Dhanvantari, who was carrying the jug containing nectar, was a plenary incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but although he was very strong, the asuras were able to take the jug of nectar from his hands.

Translation
This person, portion of a portion of Viṣṇu, was known as Dhanvantari. He was conversant with the science of medicine and enjoyed a share of the sacrifices. Ijya-bhuk means he enjoyed a share of the sacrifices.
Dhanvantari was an aṁśa of an aṁśa of Viṣṇu, expert in medicine. Even fractional incarnations of the Lord come with full competence. There is no 'minor' incarnation; every expansion does its work fully.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I dismiss minor manifestations of the Lord because they are not the 'main one'?
  • Whose competent service in my life might be a Dhanvantari I have under-honored?
