Exalted, self-satisfied persons who preach to the entire world think of your lotus feet constantly within their hearts. However, when persons who do not know your austerity see you moving with Umā, they misunderstand you to be lusty, or when they see you wandering in the crematorium they mistakenly think that you are ferocious and envious. Certainly they are shameless. They cannot understand your activities.

Lord Śiva is the topmost Vaiṣṇava ( vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ ). It is therefore said, vaiṣṇavera kriyā-mudrā vijñe nā bujhaya. Even the most intelligent person cannot understand what a Vaiṣṇava like Lord Śiva is doing or how he is acting. Those who are conquered by lusty desires and anger cannot estimate the glories of Lord Śiva, whose position is always transcendental. In all the activities associated with lusty desires, Lord Śiva is an implement of ātma-rāma. Ordinary persons, therefore, should not try to understand Lord Śiva and his activities. One who tries to criticize the activities of Lord Śiva is shameless.

Translation
Persons criticize you as a ferocious, violent person obsessed with the cremation grounds and engaged in flirting with Umā, though you are engaged in intense austerity and your feet are the object of meditation by the best of ātmārāmas. Devoid of shame, they do not know your pastimes Your greatness cannot be understood by superficial materialists. Though you are engaged in flirting with Umā, you are actually engaged in austerity. It is not a show of lust, for the best of the ātmārāmas meditate on your feet. Though this is so, people criticize you as a ferocious, violent person. You should be praised as the opposite. Those who criticize you do not know your activities. How unfortunate! They do not know your pastimes. Your pastimes involving misconduct with a display of lust and anger are mocked by people. Filled with lust and anger, do they have no shame in criticizing you, upon whose feet the best of ātmārāmas meditate?
Lord Śiva is the topmost vaiṣṇava, yet appears lusty with Umā and frightful in the crematorium to those who cannot read him. We routinely misjudge vaiṣṇavas by their externals. The shameless critic mistakes the saint's freedom for the worldling's bondage.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose external behavior have I misjudged recently because I lacked spiritual insight?
  • Where am I being 'shameless' in my evaluation of someone the Lord favors?
