O King Parīkṣit, best of the Kurus.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O best of the Kurus, Mahārāja Parīkṣit, the demigods and demons summoned Vāsuki, king of the serpents, requesting him to come and promising to give him a share of the nectar. They coiled Vāsuki around Mandara Mountain as a churning rope, and with great pleasure they endeavored to produce nectar by churning the Ocean of Milk.

Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O best of the Kurus! The devatās and demons summoned Vāsuki, king of the serpents and promised to give him a share of the nectar. They coiled Vāsuki around Mandara Mountain as a churning rope, and with great pleasure and enthusiasm they began to churn the ocean. The Seventh Chapter describes how the Lord appeared as Kūrma, and as well describes the various items churned from the ocean and Śiva drinking poison. There is also a glorification of Śiva. Vāsuki is king of the snakes. Inviting Vāsuki by promising him a share of nectar, they wrapped him around the mountain as a rope and began to churn the ocean.
Vāsuki was summoned with the promise of a nectar share, and coiled around Mandara as a rope. Even non-participants in our goal will help if we honor their stake. Wise leaders make space for everyone — not by force, but by sharing the result.
Reflection Questions
  • Whom am I trying to coax into my project without giving them a real share?
  • What does the snake-as-rope teach me about using power in cooperation rather than domination?
