sapta-dvīpa-varecchayā
If I were not satisfied with three paces of land, then surely I would not be satisfied even with possessing one of the seven islands, consisting of nine varṣas. Even if I possessed one island, I would hope to get others.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
If I were not satisfied with three paces of land, then surely I would not be satisfied even with possessing one of the seven islands, consisting of nine varṣas, since I would desire to possess all seven islands. I would not be satisfied with one island with nine varṣas because of a desire for all seven islands.
If three paces won't satisfy Me, neither would one island; with one island I'd hope for others. Vāmana names the truth: greed scales. The unsatisfied with little will not be satisfied with much.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I imagine 'next acquisition' will be the one that satisfies?
  • Have I tested whether my dissatisfaction is in proportion to what I lack — or independent of it?
