One should perfectly honor the respectable brāhmaṇas one has fed, and then, after taking their permission, one should take prasāda with his friends and relatives. For that night, one should observe strict celibacy, and the next morning, after bathing again, with purity and attention one should bathe the Deity of Viṣṇu with milk and worship Him according to the methods formerly stated in detail.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
With a friend, one should take the remnants with the permission of brāhmaṇas who have been honored. Observing celibacy at night, after bathing again the next morning, with purity and attention one should bathe the Lord with milk and worship him according to the methods mentioned on the first day of the vow. After worshipping the brāhmaṇas with garlands and betel nut, with their permission one should eat along with one’s friends. Śvo bhūte means in the morning.
Honor those brāhmaṇas, take their permission, eat prasāda with friends and family. Maintain celibacy that night. The next morning, bathe and worship the Lord again. Daily rhythm sustains the vow's power.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I treat spiritual events as one-offs rather than the start of a sustained rhythm?
  • What evening discipline would protect the value of the day's worship?
