You demigods think that your own selves are the cause of your attaining fame and victory. Because of your ignorance, saintly persons feel sorry for you. Therefore, although your words afflict the heart, we do not accept them.

Gauḍīya
Translation
We do not accept these words which afflict the heart, since they are spoken persons who are condemned by the virtuous, who think that they are the cause of their attaining fame and victory.
You think that you are the cause of victory and defeat (tatra), because of pride and ignorance. Just as you, though living, are condemned by the virtuous, we, though dead, will not be criticized.

Personal Guidance
You demigods think your selves are the cause of your fame; saints feel sorry for you. Bali identifies the demigods' ignorance: self-as-doer. Even good people can hold the wrong philosophy. Position does not equal correct understanding.
Reflection Questions
- Where am I attributing recent fame or success to my own self rather than to the Lord?
- Do saintly people quietly feel sorry for me — and what would they see?
