Vṛtrāsura was the essence of the austerities undergone by Tvaṣṭā, yet the thunderbolt killed him. Indeed, not only he but also many other stalwart heroes, whose very skin could not be injured even by all kinds of weapons, were killed by the same thunderbolt.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
By this thunderbolt I killed Vṛtrāsura, powerful with the austerity of Tvaṣṭā and I killed others as well who were powerful and whose skin could not be injured by any weapon.
Vṛtrāsura — essence of Tvaṣṭā's austerities — had been killed by this thunderbolt; many invincible-skinned heroes also. Past triumphs against stronger foes amplify the puzzlement of present failure. The pattern is broken; what is going on?
Reflection Questions
  • When my old methods fail unexpectedly, am I curious or only frustrated?
  • What invisible factor might explain why a usually-effective approach is failing now?
