manvantaraṁ manur devā manu-putrāḥ sureśvaraḥ ṛṣayo ’ṁśāvatāraś ca hareḥ ṣaḍ vidham ucyate

There are many incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Manu, the manu-putrāḥ (the sons of Manu), the king of the heavenly planets, and the seven great sages are all partial incarnations of the Supreme Lord. Manu himself, his sons Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, the demigods created by Dakṣa, and the ṛṣis like Marīci were all partial incarnations of the Lord during the reign of Svāyambhuva Manu. During that time, the incarnation of the Lord as Yajña took charge of ruling the heavenly planets. The next Manu was Svārociṣa. The Manus and the sages and demigods are further described in the following eleven verses.

Translation
The son of Agni named Svārociṣa became the second Manu. His sons were headed by Dyumat, Suṣeṇa and Rociṣmat. Each Manvantara has six elements. It is said: manvantaraṁ manur devā manu-putrāḥ sureśvarāḥ rṣayo 'ṁśāvatārāś ca hareḥ ṣaḍ-vidham ucyate Manvantaram means the reign of Manu, during which six types of personalities carry out specific duties: the ruling Manu, the devatās, the sons of Manu, Indra, the great sages and the partial incarnations of the Supreme Lord. SB 12.7.15 In the first Manvantara, Svāyambhuva was Manu, his sons were Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, the devatās were Yāma and others, and the seven sages were Marīci and others. Yajña was the avatāra and he also became Indra. These have been described in the Fourth Canto. Twelve verses now describe these six elements for the second, third and fourth Manvantaras.
Manvantaras roll on with their own Manus, sages, and rulers — all partial expansions of the one Lord. Authority structures look different across ages, but their source is constant. Look past the changing faces to the unchanging Person behind them.
Reflection Questions
  • Whom do I respect as a partial representative of the Lord in my own time and place?
  • Do I serve the office or the person behind the office?
