Then from within the pillar came a fearful sound, which appeared to crack the covering of the universe. O my dear Yudhiṣṭhira, this sound reached even the abodes of the demigods like Lord Brahmā, and when the demigods heard it, they thought, “Oh, now our planets are being destroyed!”

As we sometimes become very much afraid at the sound of a thunderbolt, perhaps thinking that our houses will be destroyed, the great demigods like Lord Brahmā feared the thundering sound that came from the pillar in front of Hiraṇyakaśipu.

Translation
At that time, from within the pillar came a fearful sound, as if the covering of the universe was cracking. O Yudhiṣṭhira, when the sound reached the abodes of the devatās like Lord Brahmā, the devatās, hearing it, thought that their abodes would be destroyed. The sound appeared to crack the universe. Hearing that sound (yam), the devatās thought that they abodes were being destroyed (atyayam).
A fearful sound emerges from inside the pillar, seeming to crack the universal covering; even Brahmā fears their planets are being destroyed. When the Lord readies a move, the whole cosmos trembles. Real interventions are not subtle.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'cosmic trembling' in your life might be the prelude to a divine intervention you are not yet seeing?
  • How do you respond when the world's order itself seems to shake?
