Your Lordship, being the origin of the life of this material world, is the master and controller of the living entities, both moving and stationary, and you inspire their consciousness. You maintain the mind and the acting and knowledge-acquiring senses, and therefore you are the great controller of all the material elements and their qualities, and you are the controller of all desires.

In this verse it is clearly indicated that the original source of everything is life. Brahmā was instructed by the supreme life, Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is the supreme living entity ( nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām ), and Brahmā is also a living entity, but the original source of Brahmā is Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā (7.7) , mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya: “O Arjuna, there is no truth superior to Me.” Kṛṣṇa is the original source of Brahmā, who is the original source of this universe. Brahmā is a representative of Kṛṣṇa, and therefore all the qualities and activities of Kṛṣṇa are also present in Lord Brahmā.

Translation
You control the moving and non-moving beings by the chief prāṇa. You are the lord of the progeny, lord of the citta of the progeny by being their consciousness. You are the lord of the mind and senses, the lord of the gross elements, and the lord of the tan-mātras and their impressions. You are the controller (īśiṣe) through the chief prāṇa, sūtrātmā. [Note: Sūtrātmā or Mukhya-prāṇa is a deity embodying all jīvas in the subtle state of mahat-tattva, before ahaṅkāra becomes manifest. ] You are the master of the progeny and master of their citta, by being their consciousness which arises from transformations of citta. You are the master of the minds and the senses controlled by the mind. You are the master of the great elements and their sense objects and their impressions.
Brahmā controls living entities, mind, senses, elements, and desires — yet he himself was instructed by Kṛṣṇa within the heart. The original source of every life is life itself, the Supreme Person. Everything alive flows from the supremely alive.
Reflection Questions
  • Whom or what do you treat as ultimate source that is actually intermediary?
  • How does the truth that life flows from Life change your sense of what is most real?
