Because of greed for the sake of the senses, the spiritual strength, education, austerity and reputation of a devotee or brāhmaṇa who is not self-satisfied dwindle, and his knowledge gradually vanishes.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
For the unsatisfied brāhmaṇa, spiritual strength, education, austerity and reputation of a brāhmaṇa dwindle. Because of greed of the senses, knowledge is thrown away. Avaīryate means “thrown down.”
When greed for the senses takes over a devotee or brāhmaṇa who is not self-satisfied, his spiritual strength, education, austerity, and reputation steadily dwindle. Greed quietly eats every other virtue. Satisfy the soul or watch the rest collapse.
Reflection Questions
  • What hidden greed in you is silently eroding qualities you used to take for granted?
  • What practice of satisfaction could you cultivate before more is lost?
