Nārada Muni said: A student should practice completely controlling his senses. He should be submissive and should have an attitude of firm friendship for the spiritual master. With a great vow, the brahmacārī should live at the gurukula, only for the benefit of the guru.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Nārada said: A student, controlling his senses, living in the guru-kula, acting only for the benefit of the guru, should be submissive to the guru like a servant, with firm faint and friendship towards him. In the Twelfth Chapter the normal duties of the āśramas for a person in a varṇa and the rules for giving up the body for the vanāprastha are described. The verb of the sentence upāsīta “he should worship” is in the next verse.
A brahmacārī student should fully control his senses, be submissive, hold firm friendship with the guru, and live at the gurukula for the guru's benefit, not his own. Real student-hood is structural, not casual. Submission is not weakness; it is the condition of receiving.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you 'study' from a teacher without actual submission to their direction?
  • What would 'living for the guru' rather than for yourself look like for one week?
