Desiring to kill his son Prahlāda, who was a great devotee of Lord Viṣṇu, Hiraṇyakaśipu tortured him in many ways.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Desiring to kill his son Prahlāda, who was a great devotee of Lord Viṣṇu, Hiraṇyakaśipu tortured him in many ways to kill him.
Hiraṇyakaśipu's love for his son Prahlāda turned into murderous hatred because of Prahlāda's devotion. Worldly bonds — even parental love — can flip into violence when devotion threatens the ego's project. Be ready for opposition from the most intimate quarters.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose love for you has cooled because your spiritual path inconveniences them?
  • How do you stay loving toward those whose love for you has become conditional?
