Mahārāja Parīkṣit inquired from Śukadeva Gosvāmī: O great sage, why did the spiritual master of the demigods, Bṛhaspati, reject the demigods, who were his own disciples? What offense did the demigods commit against their spiritual master? Please describe to me this incident.

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura comments:

saptame guruṇā tyaktair devair daitya-parājitaiḥ viśvarūpo gurutvena vṛto brahmopadeśataḥ

“This Seventh Chapter describes how Bṛhaspati was offended by the demigods, how he left them and the demigods were defeated, and how the demigods, following the instructions of Lord Brahmā, accepted Viśvarūpa as the priest to perform their sacrifice.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Mahārāja Parīkṣit said: O great sage! Why did Bṛhaspati reject the devatās? Please describe the offense the devatās committed to their guru. The Seventh Chapter describes how the devatās, abandoned by their guru Bṛhaspati and defeated by the Daityas, accepted Viśvarūpa as their guru on the advice of Brahmā. Why did Bṛhaspati reject the devatās who were his (ātmanaḥ) disciples?
Parīkṣit asks why Bṛhaspati, the demigods' guru, rejected his own disciples. The student wants to know not just what happened but what offense triggered such a momentous abandonment.
Reflection Questions
  • Have I taken seriously the offenses that would cause a guru to withdraw?
  • Whose ongoing patience am I quietly testing?
