This Citraketu is the lowest of kṣatriyas, for he has impudently overridden Brahmā and the other demigods by insulting Lord Śiva, upon whose lotus feet they always meditate. Lord Śiva is personified religion and the spiritual master of the entire world, and therefore Citraketu must be punished.

All the members of the assembly were exalted brāhmaṇas and self-realized souls, but they did not say anything about the conduct of Lord Śiva, who was embracing the goddess Pārvatī on his lap. Citraketu nonetheless criticized Lord Śiva, and therefore the opinion of Pārvatī was that he should be punished.

Translation
This arrogant Citraketu, lowest of kṣatriyas, surpassing the devatās chastises the guru of the universe, the most auspicious person among all auspicious persons, upon whose lotus feet the devatās meditate. Citraketu must be punished. “He surpassed the devatāṣ” means that by his constant criticism he considered the devatās in the assembly to be ignorant. He chastises the guru of the world.
Citraketu, lowest of kṣatriyas, has insulted Śiva — personified religion and master of even Brahmā. The crime is not just rudeness; it is theological error.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I confusing rudeness with theological mistake?
  • What corrections would I need to make at the level of doctrine, not just manners?
