My dear son, you have slept a long time. Now please get up. Your playmates are calling you to play. Since you must be very hungry, please get up and suck my breast and dissipate our lamentation.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
My dear son! Please get up. Your playmates are calling you to play. You have slept long enough. Since you must be very hungry, please eat. Suck my breast and dissipate our lamentation. Thinking that her son is sleeping she speaks. Aśanayā means “because of hunger.”
Son, you have slept long; your playmates call; you must be hungry — please get up. The denial wraps itself in tender, ordinary speech.
Reflection Questions
  • What ordinary speech am I rehearsing to a person no longer here?
  • How can I honor the wish without believing the denial?
