O great soul, you are aware of everything, yet you are asking me why I am full of anxiety. Therefore, in response to your order, let me disclose the cause.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O great brāhmaṇa! Inspired by your order, let me explain the worry in my mind to you who know everything but are asking me. I will obey the order of you who are asking. I will explain the worry in my mind (ātmani).
You know everything yet ask me — let me disclose the cause in response to your order. Knowing isn't the same as being told; sometimes the sage wants to hear it from us.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I assuming a confession isn't needed because the receiver already knows?
  • What does saying it aloud do that silent knowing does not?
