Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: When all the sages and devatās were disturbed by the extraordinary power of Vṛtrāsura, they had assembled to ask Indra to kill him. Indra, however, being afraid of killing a brāhmaṇa, did not want to kill him. The devatās requested Indra to kill Vṛtrāsura. Indra did not desire to kill him because he was afraid of killing a brāhmaṇa (bṛhad-vadhāt).
When the sages had asked Indra to kill Vṛtra, he had declined out of fear of killing a brāhmaṇa. Even powerful beings have internal limits they refuse to cross.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I have a limit I will not cross, even under pressure?
  • Which of my limits have I let others override against my better sense?
