The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul, sells Himself to His devotees such as Nārada Muni. In other words, the Lord gives pure love to such devotees and gives Himself to those who love Him purely. Great, self-realized mystic yogīs such as the four Kumāras also derive great transcendental bliss from realizing the Supersoul within themselves.

The Lord became Bali Mahārāja’s doorkeeper not because of his giving everything to the Lord, but because of his exalted position as a lover of the Lord.

Translation
Enjoying Svarga was not the result of giving land to the Supreme Lord, who gives himself to his devotees and gives realization of Paramātmā to the ātmārāmas. This is not the result of giving land to the Supreme Lord, the soul of all beings. The Lord gives himself (ātma-de), being controlled by the devotees like Nārada. He is the form of Paramātmā (ātmatame) [Note: This is an alternate version. ] for the realizers of ātmā like the Kumāras. How can the Lord who gives premānanda and brahmānanda give material pleasure to his devotee? In exchange for the land, the Lord gave Bali the bliss of prema, which brings him under control, since the Lord became the door keeper of Bali on Sutala.
The Lord sells Himself to those who love Him purely; He gives Himself to those who give themselves. Love is the currency He accepts. Material offerings approach Him; love alone receives Him.
Reflection Questions
  • Am I offering things to the Lord, or offering myself?
  • Where would 'giving Him my love' look different than 'doing things for Him'?
