Translation
Until the sun travels on the southern course, the days grow longer, and until it travels to the northern course, the nights grow longer. Yāvad dakṣiṇāyanam means from uttarāyaṇa until dakṣiṇāyana.
Day and night each have their season of dominance. The world is not always lit; darker phases are part of the design. Don't conclude from your dark season that you have lost spiritual life — sometimes the night is just longer.
Reflection Questions
  • Have I been judging a dark phase as evidence that something is wrong when it may just be a longer night?
  • What spiritual practice serves me in night-dominated seasons better than in day-dominated ones?
