Thus the chariot of the sun-god, which is trayīmaya, or worshiped by the words om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, travels through the four residences mentioned above at a speed of 3,400,800 yojanas [27,206,400 miles] in a muhūrta.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Thus the chariot of the sun-god, meant for worship, travels through the four residences mentioned above at a speed of 3,400,800 yojanas in a muhūrta. [Note: This does not correspond to the diameter given in verse 7. There are 30 muhūrtas in a day. 95,100,000/30=3,170,000]
The sun's chariot is worshipped by the words om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ — the Gāyatrī mantra itself rides through the sky. The most ordinary daily fact (sunrise) is glorified by sacred sound. Wrap the ordinary in mantra.
Reflection Questions
  • What ordinary moment of my day could I begin to wrap in sacred sound (a name, a mantra)?
  • Where have I separated the sacred from the daily as if they were different categories?
