In the middle of the summit of Meru is the township of Lord Brahmā. Each of its four sides is calculated to extend for ten million yojanas [eighty million miles]. It is made entirely of gold, and therefore learned scholars and sages call it Śātakaumbhī.

Translation
In the middle of the summit of Meru is the township of Lord Brahmā. Each of its four sides is calculated to extend for many thousands of yojanas. [Note: The top of Sumeru measures 32,000 yojanas according to verse 7. The dimension of Brahmā’s city should thus probably not be 10, 000,000 yojanas or a thousand ayutas. Ayuta could mean “many” in this case. ] It is made entirely of gold, and therefore learned scholars and sages call it Śātakaumbhī.
Brahmā's golden city stands at the summit of Meru — vast, central, the seat of the secondary creator. Even the operational center of universal management has a precise address. The universe is governed, not unattended.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do you act as if no one is in charge of the cosmos, when scripture insists there is?
  • How would a felt sense of governance change your trust in your own life's small arrangements?
