All the quadrangles, lanes and streets in the city, and the raised sitting places at the crossings, were thoroughly cleansed and sprinkled with sandalwood water; and auspicious grains such as rice and barley, and flowers, fruits and many other auspicious presentations, were scattered all over the city.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The yards, highways, watchtowers and roads were washed and smeared with sandalwood and covered with offerings, raw rice, fruits, flowers, barley grains and popped rice. Catvara means yard. Rathyā means a wide road.
All quadrangles, lanes and crossings were sprinkled with sandalwood water, and grains, flowers and fruits were scattered everywhere. Hospitality on this scale is itself worship; an entire community can become a temple.
Reflection Questions
  • Where could I extend hospitality beyond my immediate circle into the shared space of my street or building?
  • What would 'sprinkling sandalwood' look like in modern form in my workplace?
