Alas, just see how I was conquered by my wife! Just imagine my cruelty! Out of love and affection the boy was trying to get up on my lap, but I did not receive him, nor did I even pat him for a moment. Just imagine how hardhearted I am.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
I am controlled by a woman. See my cruelty! Most vile, I did not welcome my son with love when he tried to climb on my lap.
'Just see how my wife conquered me; the boy reached for my lap and I didn't even pat him.' The smallest gestures denied — a pat, a moment of welcome — carry the weight of the entire failure of love.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose small reaching toward me did I refuse, and how would my acknowledgment alone heal something?
  • What 'pat' did I withhold today that I could still give?
