Maitreya told Vidura: O great soul, from Dambha and Māyā were born Greed and Nikṛti, or Cunning. From their combination came children named Krodha [Anger] and Hiṁsā [Envy], and from their combination were born Kali and his sister Durukti (Harsh Speech).
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O great soul! From Cheating and Illusion were born Greed and Deceit. From their combination came children named Anger and Violence, and from their combination were born Quarrel and his sister Profanity. Nikṛtiḥ means deceit. From Anger and Violence came Quarrel and Profantiy.
From Bluffing and Cheating came Greed and Cunning; their children Anger and Envy then produced Kali and Harsh Speech. Inner vices have a known lineage; if you can name the parent, you can interrupt the line.
Reflection Questions
  • Which of my recurring outbursts is actually a grandchild of an older greed or cunning I haven't named?
  • Where could I cut a line of inheritance by addressing the parent vice instead of the symptom?
