The black, slick hair on his head was very fine and curly, and his neck, like a conchshell, was decorated with auspicious lines. He wore a very valuable dhotī, and there was a nice wrapper on the upper part of his body.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
He had fine, black, curly, glossy hair. His neck was like a conch. He was wearing valuable cloth on his lower and upper body. Upavīya means he had an upper cloth.
Black slick curls, conch-like neck with auspicious lines, valuable dhotī, nice upper wrapper. Adornment of the body is integrated into kingship; renunciation of it has its time and place.
Reflection Questions
  • Where do I confuse asceticism with negligence about how I appear?
  • What is appropriate adornment in my role, that I've been embarrassed about?
