My dear Maitreya, to part with one’s life is very difficult. Would you kindly explain to me how such a son-in-law and father-in-law could quarrel so bitterly that the great goddess Satī could give up her life?
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Please explain to me the hatred between the son-in-law and father-in-law because of which Satī gave up her life, which is hard to give up? Yataḥ means “from which hatred.” Please tell me about the hatred by which she gave her life.
Vidura marvels that the quarrel went all the way to Satī giving up her life — small egos, when fed, cost large lives. Pay attention to early friction; the gap between offense and catastrophe is shorter than you think.
Reflection Questions
  • What current friction in my life could escalate further than I'm imagining?
  • Am I treating early signs of conflict with the seriousness they deserve?
