Translation
O Vidura! Kuvera offered a golden throne. Varuṇa offered an umbrella brilliant as the moon, flowing with water.
Kuvera gave a golden throne; Varuṇa gave a moon-bright umbrella that sprayed cooling water. Every gift is functional, not merely decorative; the right gift specifically serves the recipient's role.
Reflection Questions
  • Which gift I have given was actually functional, not just nice — and how could I give more like that?
  • What functional support does someone I love need that I've been substituting with decoration?
