My dear Vidura, all good fortune unto you. The foolish King, who thought himself very learned, thus insulted the great sages, and the sages, being brokenhearted by the King’s words, became very angry at him.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O Vidura! Being insulted by the King who thought himself learned and who had refused their request, the brāhmaṇas, became angry with him. The sages were mistreated (asat-kṛtāḥ) by Vena (tena).
Thinking himself learned, the foolish king insulted the sages; the sages, brokenhearted, became furious. The breaking of saintly hearts in sequence with the eruption of saintly anger is a recognizable pattern; don't mistake it for moodiness.
Reflection Questions
  • Where have I broken a saintly heart and only later seen the anger that followed?
  • Whose anger toward me may be the proper sequel to a hurt I caused?
