O my dear Vidura, the Lord’s waist was covered with yellow cloth resembling the saffron dust of the kadamba flower, and it was encircled by a well-decorated belt. His chest was decorated with the śrīvatsa marking and a necklace of unlimited value.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O Vidura! The Lord wore cloth the color of golden kadamba pollen around his waist and a belt. On his chest marked with the Śrīvatsa mark was a necklace of unlimited value. [Note: This verse could also indicate Kṛṣṇa.] O Vidura (vatsa)! He had a necklace dear to the place on his chest having the Śrīvatsa mark.
Every detail of the Lord's form — yellow cloth like kadamba pollen, jeweled belt, śrīvatsa, priceless necklace — invites the eye into transcendental beauty. Devotional aesthetics matter; the Lord's form is meant to be drunk in through detailed contemplation.
Reflection Questions
  • Which detail of the Lord's form draws me most, and do I dwell on it daily?
  • How might careful contemplation of the Lord's beauty reshape my taste for other things?
