His entrails are pulled out by the hounds and vultures of hell, even though he is still alive to see it, and he is subjected to torment by serpents, scorpions, gnats and other creatures that bite him.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
In Yama’s abode, his entrails are pulled out while he is alive by dogs and vultures, and his body is pained by the biting of snakes, scorpions and gad-flies.
Entrails are pulled out by hounds and vultures while he is still alive to see. Serpents and scorpions bite. The torments are humiliatingly visible to the very person suffering them. Sin is exposed even to its own perpetrator.
Reflection Questions
  • What inner 'entrails' am I afraid to see in myself before someone else has to expose them?
  • How might present honest self-examination spare a future watching-of-one's-own-undoing?
