Under the scorching sun, the criminal has to pass through roads of hot sand with forest fires on both sides. He is whipped on the back by the constables because of his inability to walk, and he is afflicted by hunger and thirst, but unfortunately there is no drinking water, no shelter and no place for rest on the road.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Afflicted by hunger and thirst, burned by the winds made hot as a forest fire by the sun, beaten on his back by a whip, with difficulty, and though not capable, he moves on a path covered with hot sand, without a resting place with water. On the path there is no resting place with water (nirāśramodake).
The criminal walks roads of hot sand under scorching sun, fires on both sides, no water or shelter. The verse names what unrepented action incurs — concrete, sensory, miserable. Karma collects, and there are no easy roads at the end of certain lives.
Reflection Questions
  • What action am I currently choosing that I would not want to walk this road for?
  • How does the vividness of this picture change my next decision?
