When he suffers reverses in his occupation, he tries again and again to improve himself, but when he is baffled in all attempts and is ruined, he accepts money from others because of excessive greed.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
After trying again and again to maintain himself while failing each time, overcome by greed and feeling miserable, he desires others wealth. Vārtāyām means “in maintaining himself.”
When work reverses, a man tries again — but if all attempts fail, he accepts money from others out of excessive greed. Even repeated honest effort can break under enough pressure. Watch the moment when honest persistence tips into desperate dependence.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my life am I approaching the breaking-point between honest effort and desperate borrowing?
  • What discipline could help me recognize 'enough' before greed takes over?
