First of all a mouth appeared in Him, and then came forth the organ of speech, and with it the god of fire, the deity who presides over that organ. Then a pair of nostrils appeared, and in them appeared the olfactory sense, as well as prāṇa, the vital air.

With the manifestation of speech, fire also became manifested, and with the manifestation of nostrils the vital air, the breathing process and the sense of smell also became manifested.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
First his mouth became differentiated. Then the organ of speech (subtle organ) appeared. With the organ of speech, the fire devatā appeared, and entered the mouth. The two nostrils became differentiated. Penetrated by prāṇa, the sense organ called the nose (subtle) corresponding to the two nostrils (etayoḥ) appeared. With the organ of speech, the fire devatā appeared and entered the organ. The two nostrils then appeared. The case is changed to the singular for all the senses.
Mind and senses, left ungoverned, will quietly run a life into the ground. The verse implies that small daily regulation is more powerful than occasional dramatic resolve.
Reflection Questions
  • What small rule kept consistently would do more for you than a dramatic vow once broken?
  • Where could you offer the senses a better object instead of merely fighting them?
