the respectful girls.
The girls, being very respectful to Devahūti, brought her forth, and after bathing her with valuable oils and ointments, they gave her fine, new, spotless cloth to cover her body.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
After bathing the cheerful Devahūti using valuable, fragrant oils, the respectful girls gave her fine, new clothing, valuable, praiseworthy, sparkling ornaments, food with all good qualities and sweet drinks. With the bath there were suitable oils. They gave her clothing to wear. They gave her food and drinks.
The girls bathe Devahūti with valuable oils and dress her in spotless new cloth. After long austerity, the woman is honored with reverent care. The right kind of post-tapasya treatment is essential — austerity without honor is incomplete.
Reflection Questions
  • Whose long austerity in my life deserves bathing-with-oils kind of care?
  • How might I learn to receive care after periods of self-discipline?
