Here and there in that palace were multitudes of live swans and pigeons, as well as artificial swans and pigeons so lifelike that the real swans rose above them again and again, thinking them live birds like themselves. Thus the palace vibrated with the sounds of these birds.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The airplane reverberated with the sounds of flocks of swans and doves which flew towards flocks of artificial birds situated there, thinking the artificial birds were real. Swans and doves flew to meet artificial birds, thinking them to be real, while making ardent cries.
Live swans rise repeatedly thinking the artificial swans are their kin. Even artistry in the right setting confuses the natural world into participation. Beauty calls the real toward it.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'artificial swans' in my work might draw the real toward them?
  • Where does the quality of my craft genuinely call others to participate?
