The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana were perplexed by great difficulties because a certain portion of the Yamunā was poisoned by the chief of the reptiles [Kāliya]. The Lord chastised the snake-king within the water and drove him away, and after coming out of the river, He caused the cows to drink the water and proved that the water was again in its natural state.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Subduing Kāliya, he revived the dead cowherd boys and cows, and made them drink the water which became free of poison. He revived the cowherds and cows who had fainted on drinking the poison water and made them drink the water, which was now free of poison (prakrṭi-sthitam).
When a single source of poison hurts the community, the Lord steps in to chastise but not annihilate. Address poison in your environment directly; do not leave the water tainted because confronting feels uncomfortable.
Reflection Questions
  • What 'Kaliya' in your community or workplace is poisoning the shared water?
  • Are you willing to step onto its hood, or are you waiting for someone else to act?
