Misty halos appeared around the sun and the moon during solar and lunar eclipses again and again. Claps of thunder were heard even without clouds, and sounds like those of rattling chariots emerged from the mountain caves.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
There were many eclipses of the sun and moon with halos. There was thunder without clouds and from mountain caves arose sounds of chariots. Nirghātā means thunder without clouds. Sounds like chariots (ratha-nirhrāda) arose from mountain caves (vivarebhyaḥ).
Halos around sun and moon, thunder without clouds, chariot-sounds from mountain caves — the world signals through omens. The Vedic worldview reads phenomena as messages. Modern blindness to omens is itself a kind of poverty.
Reflection Questions
  • What strange phenomena around me might be messages I'm dismissing as coincidence?
  • How could I cultivate a more attentive reading of natural and personal omens?
